China Association,
Hongkong,17th.September,1908.
I beg to acknowledge receipt of your favour
of 9th. instant, No. 2890/08, enclosing copy of the counter-
-draft Convention with Japan on the subject of Trade-marks,
together with copy of a proposed declaration on the part of
Japan.
1.
The above have been fully considered by my
Committee, the members of which consider that the Convention
together with the declaration would be acceptable to the British
mercantile community, provided that the further legislation
mentioned in the declaration will be such as to bring Japanese
law into line with British.
2.
This Committee would be glad if assurances
can be given that the protection afforded to British Trade-
-marks under the Convention will extend to marks registered in
Hongkong and other British Colonies. If this is not so intended
they would suggest that some alteration should be made to cover
this point.
Hon. Mr. F. H. May, C.M.G.,
Colonial Secretary.

A. S. D. Cousland, Hon. Secretary.
